The marginally known Australian actress has been receiving praise right and left for her supporting work in the new crime drama. God knows, I disliked the film itself, but I enjoyed Weaver's performance, and you can still appreciate her performance. I think her performance is drugged down by my discontent with the film itself which is probably why she's so low in my top 10 (#8).
For playing a sociopath, Weaver sure makes the role of the mother sweet and charming; Weaver brings multiple layers to the character, which is what really makes the performance and the character to the film so special. It's a great group of ladies nominated this year, and I don't know if I'd have a problem with any of them winning (except for the category fraud of the True Grit star, Steinfield). I also found her to be one of the most quotable characters of 2010.
