Sure, the chick-on-chick sex scene probably drove some people to see it, but Black Swan is a movie people just can't seem to get enough of. Not only has it achieved critical acclaim, but with a budget of only 13 million has earned 80 million at the box office.
Expected to lead in Oscar nominations (12 critics choice and BAFTA nominations, 4 Golden Globe nods, and 3 SAG noms not to mention being recognized by every technical guild; and has been named best horror movie of the year), it could easily capture more moviegoers until Oscar time. I hope it does, reaching 100 million would be a huge accomplishment.
Natalie Portman's breathtaking performance is also a reason I think people are connecting to it like they are. She's already the winner of many city critic awards, the Broadcast Critic's Choice award, and the Golden Globe (the only ones that have been announced minus the National Board of Review); I expect this to continue with her winning 1) the SAG, 2) BAFTA, and 3) OSCAR!
People are going back again and again to witness the magical event that is Black Swan. It's in a two-way tie for my favorite film of the year, Inception. Black Swan a great example that you don't need a huge budget for a film to reach out to critics, audiences, and award voters. If you haven't seen it yet, drop what you're doing ASAP and consume yourself with the movie event of the year.
