Most talk-show hosts, when dealing with current Oscar nominee, praise their certain performance in maybe one or two comments (most notably Ellen). But a few owed recognitions went a long way with Letterman on Portman's stunning performance in Black Swan. It's almost as if they paid him under the table to pound it into the ground. It's the best performance of the year, one of the best and most original character portraits of all-time, so the praise was due, he really made it perfectly clear that the performance should win the Oscar.

DL: So this movie, I so wanted things to be okay. Because I'm pulling for you in this movie.
NP: Thank you!
DL: The amazing thing is, you get a lot of actors and actresses who get into their movies and motion pictures and think "Oh I should win awards for this," and I looked at this thing and I thought, "Anybody else who thinks they got a shot at being at being nominated or winning an award should just go see this movie, because they aren't even going to be close because-
NP: (embarrassed) Oh thank you, that's very kind. (giggles)
DL: Oh, it's tremendous! The dancing: who would do that? Commit to that.
NP: Thank you.
DL: Then the acting, what do I know about acting? I'll tell you what I know about acting nothing.
(Portman laughs)
DL: But, oh my God. What a tremendous piece of work! It's exciting and scary, and you carry- this movie could be about Gocarting and you'd be good in it. Forget the movie. The movie's crazy, but what you come out of there thinking is "Wow, this woman..." It's transendent what you were able to do. And if you don't win anything, Paul and I will take you to dinner. It's a win-win. You've already been nominated for one Academy Award, you'll win this one easily. I just can't imagine any other actress coming close to this.
(shows clip)
DL: Isn't she lovely in that? She's amazing.
